Piper
Piper, Piper, the Red, Red Worm.
Awoke Last Night to the Sound of the Storm.
Words are the Words I Sailed Upon.
Well, That's all it is. But repeated over and over until it reaches a feverish
pace. And while the lyrics are simple yet striking, the chords are the
same way. Basically, it's just G > Am7 > C > F > Em > F repeated in a funky
4/4 measure. It repeats every 12 beats instead of the standard 16.
As odd as the lyrics are, they somehow make a lot of sense to me. The
design below is from my favorite Phish
shirt, given to me by Adam
on December 29th, 1998.
He was given the shirt by a dancing girl at Madison Square Garden for moving
a hot dog off the floor. I hate the Piper/Pepsi takeoff, finding it too
uncreative and ugly for such a subtle, elegant song. And I despise Pepsi.
This shirt really does the song justice.
I was wearing this shirt to the Phil
& Phriends show in San Francisco on April 16, 1999, when someone
said, "I know the girl who made that shirt!" As it turns out, the girl
who designed and drew the shirt is named Kerri
Hale, and she is incredibly nice. She remembered giving a shirt to
the guy who saved her mood during those
incredible MSG shows. I'm just grateful for it ending up in my hands.
